She knows what a percentage means. She got 72% in her own SLC exam, twenty-some years ago, and remembers exactly what that felt like. But GPA 3.4 tells her nothing on its own. Is that good? Is it the same as her 72%? Why does the mark sheet show letters instead of the actual marks he scored?

She's not wrong to be confused. Nepal switched from a percentage-and-division system to a letter-grade GPA system for school-leaving exams starting in 2072 BS (2015/16), and the switch was never really explained to the people who have to read the results - parents, and often the students themselves. Teachers who compute it by hand every term aren't always confident in it either.

This post explains exactly how the NEB grading system works, shows the actual arithmetic for calculating a GPA across multiple subjects, and covers the specific points that trip people up - GPA versus grade point, how NG is handled, and where practical marks fit in.


What "B+, GPA 3.2" Actually Means

Start with the smallest unit: a single subject.

When a student sits an exam - say, Grade 10 Science - they get a raw mark out of 100. The National Examination Board doesn't publish that raw mark on the official result. Instead, it converts the mark into a letter grade and a corresponding grade point, using a fixed scale that applies across every subject and every grade level under NEB - SEE (Grade 10) and +2 (Grades 11-12) alike.

So "B+ in Science" means the student scored somewhere between 70 and 79 marks in that subject. The grade point attached to B+ is 3.2. That grade point - not the raw mark - is what gets used in every calculation from here on, including the overall GPA that appears at the bottom of the mark sheet.

This is the first thing that confuses people coming from the old system: the official result doesn't tell you whether a B+ was a 70 or a 79. Both round to the same letter grade and the same grade point. The precision that a percentage system gives you is deliberately smoothed out.


The Full NEB Grade-to-GPA Table

This is the scale NEB uses for every subject, at both SEE and +2 level. It hasn't changed since letter grading was introduced, and it's worth keeping a copy of exactly this table if you're a teacher, a coordinator, or a parent trying to check a mark sheet by hand.

D, at 1.6, is the lowest passing grade. NG stands for "Not Graded" - not a fail in the old sense, but a subject where the student didn't reach the minimum grade point to be considered graded at all.

A few things worth noticing in this table. The bands aren't all the same width - A+ covers an 11-point range while B+, B, C+, and C each cover exactly 10 points, and D covers only 5. The grade point differences aren't evenly spaced either: A+ to A is a 0.4 drop, same as A to B+, but D to NG is a 1.6 drop. That last jump is the steepest cliff on the whole scale, and it's the one that matters most for a student sitting right at the boundary.

NG is not automatically a "fail" the way it was under the old system. A student with one NG subject typically retakes that subject through a grade increment or supplementary exam, while their other subjects' grades stand. It's a per-subject outcome, not a whole-exam verdict.


How to Calculate a Student's Overall GPA: A Worked Example

Here's the part most explanations skip: the actual arithmetic. Overall GPA is the simple average of the grade points across all subjects - not a weighted average, not adjusted for subject difficulty, just an average.

Take a real-looking SEE result. A student sits five subjects: Compulsory Mathematics, Science, English, Social Studies, and Nepali. Their marks and corresponding grades:

To get the overall GPA, add up the five grade points and divide by five:

2.8 + 3.6 + 3.2 + 4.0 + 2.4 = 16.0
16.0 ÷ 5 = 3.20

This student's overall GPA is 3.20. That's the number that appears on the mark sheet, and it's what gets quoted when someone says "he got a GPA of 3.2 in SEE."

Now compare that to what a percentage-based average would have shown: (68 + 84 + 73 + 91 + 58) / 5 = 74.8%, which - if you translate the raw average back through the same table - would land right in the B+ band. The GPA of 3.20 sits between B and B+, closer to B+, which is roughly consistent, but not identical, because GPA averages grade points, not raw marks. This is exactly why you can't reverse-engineer a precise percentage from a GPA - the averaging happens after the raw marks have already been bucketed into grades.

For a +2 student, the process is identical, just with more subjects. Grade 11 and 12 students typically sit six or seven subjects depending on their stream. Take a Science-stream +2 student with seven subjects:

Sum the seven grade points: 3.2 + 3.6 + 2.8 + 3.6 + 3.2 + 2.8 + 4.0 = 23.2. Divide by 7: 23.2 ÷ 7 = 3.31 (rounded to two decimal places). That's the overall GPA that appears on this student's +2 mark sheet.

There's no separate formula for SEE versus +2, and no weighting for subjects considered "harder." A GPA point in Computer Science counts exactly the same as a GPA point in Compulsory Nepali. The only real difference between the two levels is subject count, and, for Science stream specifically, an additional rule layered on top of the grade table: Science stream students generally need a minimum overall GPA of around 2.0, with at least C+ in both Science and Mathematics, to be considered as having met the stream's requirements. That's a policy rule sitting on top of the grading table, not a change to the table itself.

If you're calculating this by hand for a whole class, the most common error isn't the arithmetic - it's using the wrong number of subjects in the denominator. A student with an NG in one subject and a pending supplementary exam is sometimes divided by the wrong count, which skews every other GPA in the batch if it's done on a shared spreadsheet.


Why Nepal Moved From Percentage and Division to Letter Grading

Before 2072 BS, students under the SLC system were sorted into Distinction, First Division, Second Division, and Third Division based on their aggregate percentage, with a hard fail line below roughly 32%. That single pass/fail line, attached to a nationally-publicized exam, created enormous pressure - the SLC was even nicknamed the "Iron Gate" because of how many students it turned away from higher education in a single sitting.

The government's stated reasoning for the switch, described in coverage of the transition, was to reduce the intense pressure and stigma that came from a single failing percentage - a student who scored 31% and a student who scored 5% were both simply "failed," with no distinction and no path back except retaking the entire exam. Letter grading replaced that cliff with graded bands, and replaced the single all-or-nothing exam result with a per-subject outcome: a student can be graded normally in five subjects and only need to retake the one where they scored below 35.

This is a real, defensible tradeoff, not just a rebrand. The old system optimized for a clean sorting mechanism - who passes, who doesn't, who gets Distinction. The new system optimizes for reducing the number of students whose academic future is derailed by one bad exam day in one subject. What it costs is the precision parents like the one at the start of this post are used to: you can no longer look at a mark sheet and know, to the percentage point, exactly how a student did.

The row that matters most for a family is the retake row. Under the old system, one weak subject could mean repeating an entire academic year. Under the current system, it means sitting one supplementary paper while the rest of the result stands. That's the actual mechanism behind the "reduced pressure" framing - it's not just softer language, it changed what a bad exam day in one subject costs a student.


GPA vs. Grade Point vs. Percentage: Where People Get Confused

These three terms get used interchangeably in casual conversation, but they're three different things, and mixing them up is where most of the confusion in the opening scenario comes from.

Grade point is the single number attached to one subject - the 3.2 that corresponds to a B+ in Science. It's a lookup from the table above, applied per subject.

GPA is the average of all the grade points across every subject a student sat. It's a summary statistic calculated once, at the end, after every subject has already been converted. This is the number on the front of the mark sheet.

Percentage is the raw score - marks obtained out of full marks. NEB doesn't officially report percentage anymore for SEE and +2, but it's still the number teachers work with while marking, and it's the number that determines which grade band a subject falls into in the first place.

The confusion compounds because a percentage can be reconstructed roughly (by reversing the table for each subject) but never precisely (because GPA is an average of already-rounded numbers, and information is lost at that first rounding step). A parent asking "so what percentage did he actually get?" is asking a question the system was deliberately designed not to answer directly.

How practical and theory components factor in. Most NEB subjects, particularly Science and other lab-based subjects, split total marks between a theory exam and internal/practical assessment - commonly a 75/25 or 80/20 split depending on the subject. These aren't reported as two separate grades. They're combined into one total mark first, and that combined mark is what gets converted into the subject's letter grade and grade point. A student can't pass a subject on a strong theory score alone if their practical component falls below the minimum threshold set for that subject - the specific pass conditions vary by subject and are set by NEB, so schools need to configure these per-subject rules rather than assuming one blanket rule covers every subject.

Can you convert GPA back to a percentage? Only roughly, and this is worth being direct about since it's the question behind most parent phone calls to a school office. A GPA of 3.2 sits inside a band roughly corresponding to 70-79% if it came from a single subject, but an overall GPA of 3.2 across five subjects could have come from five different combinations of marks that don't average to the same percentage. There's no official NEB percentage equivalent for an overall GPA, and any "GPA to percentage" calculator you find online is doing an approximation, not reversing an actual calculation NEB performs. Schools that want to be precise with families should talk in grade points and bands, not manufacture a percentage that doesn't officially exist.

How absence is handled. A student who misses an exam entirely isn't the same as a student who scored below 35 and got NG. Depending on the reason for absence, schools typically record it separately (often as "Absent" rather than a graded NG), and the student becomes eligible for the subject's supplementary exam rather than being folded into the same category as someone who sat the exam and scored poorly. Getting this distinction right in your records matters - it's the difference between a disciplinary/administrative note and an academic grade, and the two get audited differently when a parent disputes a result.


How This Connects to Report Card Generation for a School

Everything above is straightforward for one student's mark sheet. It gets considerably less straightforward when a school has to do it correctly for 400 students, across a dozen sections, twice a year.

The arithmetic itself - averaging grade points - is trivial for a computer and genuinely time-consuming and error-prone by hand. What actually causes mistakes at school scale isn't the averaging step. It's everything upstream of it: making sure the grading table is configured with the exact current boundaries (not a version from a few years ago), making sure practical and theory marks are combined correctly per subject before conversion, making sure a student with a pending supplementary exam isn't averaged as if they'd already been graded, and making sure NG and Absent are tracked as genuinely different states.
